Happy Mother’s Day!

This Sunday is Mother’s Day – the one day each year that we celebrate the women who have given us life.

The modern holiday of Mother’s Day was first celebrated in 1908, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother. She then began a campaign to make “Mother’s Day” a recognized holiday in the United States. Although she was successful in 1914, she was already disappointed with its commercialization by the 1920s. Still, Jarvis coined the term in 1908 and it became an official holiday in 1974.

Brands use Mother’s Day as a time to ramp up their digital marketing campaigns across social media platforms and paid advertising. Flower companies, jewelry designers, and restaurants compete for the most desired digital ad spaces. This time of year spikes phone traffic as much as 37% (more phone calls are made on Mother’s Day than any other day of the year). It’s interesting how an original idea of a memorial turned into a commercialized occasion that is benefitting several companies across the United States.

With this all being said, history laid down and gifts bought, let’s take this day to show our moms how much they mean to us. After all, mothers have the toughest job in the world. Nine months of restlessness, on-call 24/7, sleepless nights, endless cleaning, and warm hugs: these are things that are truly priceless, but often times, go unnoticed. Take today to show love to your mom, and for all you mothers out there: Happy Mother’s Day!
